Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking Policy
Last updated: 14 July 2026
Zero-tolerance venue rule
Strictly prohibited on the premises
Alcohol, illegal or unlawfully possessed drugs, cannabis, smoking and vaping are not allowed anywhere on Playa Arena premises. Anyone found breaching this policy will be refused entry or instructed to leave the venue immediately.
1. Purpose and application
This policy protects players, spectators, staff, children, school property and the wider community. It is a condition of entry and applies to every person entering Playa Arena, including players, booking holders, guests, spectators, suppliers and event attendees.
For this policy, the “premises” include the courts and turf areas, spectator areas, entrances, walkways, bathrooms, parking areas and any surrounding school property used to access or attend Playa Arena.
2. Alcohol is not allowed
- No person may bring, possess, open, consume, supply, distribute or sell alcohol on the premises.
- The rule applies to sealed and opened containers and to alcohol kept in bags, coolers or vehicles parked on the premises.
- Anyone who appears intoxicated may be refused entry or removed where their condition creates a safety, conduct or safeguarding concern.
- No booking, tournament, private event or group arrangement overrides this policy.
3. Drugs and cannabis are not allowed
- The use, possession, supply, distribution or sale of illegal drugs or unlawfully possessed controlled substances is prohibited.
- Cannabis is prohibited anywhere on the premises, regardless of whether private adult use may be lawful in another setting.
- Drug-related equipment or paraphernalia may not be brought onto the premises.
- Lawfully prescribed medication may be carried and used by the person for whom it was prescribed, provided it is used responsibly and does not create a safety risk.
4. Smoking and vaping are not allowed
Playa Arena is a fully smoke-free and vape-free venue. The prohibition applies indoors and outdoors across the entire premises and includes:
- Cigarettes, cigars, pipes and hookahs.
- Electronic cigarettes, disposable vapes and other vaping devices.
- Heated-tobacco products.
- Cannabis or any other substance smoked or inhaled through a smoking or vaping device.
5. Enforcement and removal
Anyone caught breaching this policy will be required to stop immediately and leave the venue.
- Entry may be refused, or the person may be removed without a refund or booking credit.
- The booking holder is responsible for informing all members of their group and may be held accountable for repeated or serious breaches by their attendees.
- Playa Arena may suspend or permanently ban a person from future bookings or attendance.
- School management, security or the South African Police Service may be contacted where illegal activity, threats, violence, refusal to leave or another serious safety concern is involved.
- Failure to follow a lawful instruction from Playa Arena staff to leave the premises may result in further action.
6. South African legal context
This venue policy is stricter than the minimum legal position in some circumstances. It applies in addition to South African law and does not depend on a criminal offence having occurred before Playa Arena can refuse entry or remove a person.
- KwaZulu-Natal Liquor Licensing Act 6 of 2010: regulates and licenses the retail sale of liquor in KwaZulu-Natal, including sales at sports grounds and special events. Playa Arena does not permit alcohol on the premises under this venue policy. View the official Act on the SAPS website.
- Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act 140 of 1992: section 4 addresses the unlawful use and possession of listed drugs, while section 5 addresses dealing, subject to lawful exceptions and later amendments. View the official Act on the Department of Justice website.
- Cannabis for Private Purposes Act 7 of 2024: provides a legal framework for private adult cannabis use. Regardless of what may be lawful in a private setting, cannabis remains prohibited on Playa Arena premises as a condition of entry. View the official Act on Parliament's website.
- Tobacco Products Control Act 83 of 1993: provides for the prohibition or restriction of smoking in public places. Playa Arena's rule extends to all smoking and vaping across the entire premises. View the official Act on the South African Government website.
These references provide legal context. They do not limit Playa Arena's right to enforce a stricter private venue rule as a condition of entry.
